Most kids use Snapchat to goof around and stay in contact with their friends — end of story. Yes, there’s some mature content, but it’s appropriate for most teens 16 and up.
Social media can also help in boosting social interaction among kids – it’s a more comfortable environment where children can initiate new relationships without feeling awkward and anxious. Social platforms can help kids make friends and enable them to build more familiarity with other children.

Fast-growing social video app TikTok was ranked second with 29 percent of teenagers in the United States stating it to be their favorite, ahead of legacy platforms Facebook and Twitter.

The app says it is appropriate for kids ages 12+ but in my opinion as a parent, this is definitely not the case! If you are considering for your tween/ teen, I recommend opening an account first for yourself and monitoring the articles for a week or so. Then decide what you feel is appropriate for you family.

However, social media use can also negatively affect teens, distracting them, disrupting their sleep, and exposing them to bullying, rumor spreading, unrealistic views of other people’s lives and peer pressure. The risks might be related to how much social media teens use.
At Protect Young Eyes, we operate under the assumption that no child for any reason should be using social media prior to age 13. Turning 13 is the minimum requirement, and is in no way an automatic approval for Instagram or anything else. Because, remember, age alone is the wrong question.
The risks you need to be aware of are:
- cyberbullying (bullying using digital technology)
- invasion of privacy.
- identity theft.
- your child seeing offensive images and messages.
- the presence of strangers who may be there to ‘groom’ other members.

Legally, you are supposed to be at least 13 years old to use Snapchat (although like Instagram, many kids under 13 are already using it). If you are under 18, you are supposed to get parental permission. There is a version for kids under 13 called Snapkidz.
